George Pogue grew up in a small tourist town in the Elk River valley, in the northwest foothills of the Ozarks. His parents owned the weekly newspaper during the 1950s and 1960s, and he spent much of his youth in that environment. Pogue has been a Boy Scout, volunteer firefighter, businessman, and newspaper publisher. He lives on his farm outside Noel, Missouri.
